Jakarta business owners warn on floods

Jakarta, April 1 — The last two storms that hit Jakarta yesterday left at least 10,000 people homeless and thousands of trees and houses destroyed.

Meanwhile, another major flood threat has been called off this evening, leaving around 30,000 people without power.

“No one is getting through the streets here so it won’t be for long. I think the area is pretty safe tonight with the floods clearing up,” says Nida Lekkara.

The NDRRMA warned that it would be the worst flooding problem in modern Indonesian history.

Lekkara has lived in the Indonesian city of Bukit Jaya for four generations.

“This flood is like that time when my brother-in-law died,” Lekkara says. “He had a house with all this flooding coming in.”
